Where in your body are you present?
My name is Somya Kautia. I’m an India-based contemporary dancer and movement practitioner.
With 8+ years of experience, my main focus is performance, choreography, teaching, and research. My recent study includes contact improvisation, and body mechanics and interactions. What the body is capable of doing and how little can be done to communicate lends itself strongly to my creative process.
Not to mention, drawing from life as is, the mundane activities – movement in a coffee shop, or the routine – catching the metro at the same time, or the flow of life – pollen being carried by the wind. All combined influence my study for composition and the process of creation.
I aspire to create…
a collaborative space for research & creation that is motivated by purpose & not hierarchy
performances through improvisation techniques to bridge the gap between training and performance
a safe environment to hold conversations for reflective & interactive dialogue
DEVISE: A Performance Training Project
A 10 day creation process leading upto a performance on 11th September.
Starting from 1st September, we will be working with 15 students to train and produce a full length contemporary piece.
You will be training with us for 4 hours everyday, which will include, physical training, a safe space to explore movements that intrigue you, and creating a piece with our direction.
WAITING ROOM
A contemporary piece by Ritu and Somya
This piece is based on the idea of waiting to see where the next segment of life (the participants) will be.
It includes sections with distinct stories and explores the different elements of space, negotiating time with opportunities and textures in movement.
Waiting Room will be created with the participants of a 10 day Performance Training Project – Devise.
